With
crude oil hitting an all
time high of over $80 a
barrel and farmers having
converted to growing
biofuels, isn't it
about time world governments
really
started thinking about
the use of non-carbon fuels?
I
mentioned in an earlier
newsletter that the change
over to growing crops for
biofuels would lead to
higher
food prices - it's starting
happening already!
With
rising prices and the
pressure on finance there
has never been a better time
to start thinking about the
alternatives for our future
transport needs.
Regardless
of whatever happens in the
future, we still
need transport to get us
around, but it has to be
economical and
environmentally friendly.
Global
warming aside, I think the
changes in our
lifestyles is more likely to
be forced on us through
financial pressures. It will
be down to technology
to come up with the answers
and it will sure as hell
not come from our major
conglomerates.

The
prototype has now been
painted and I am now
re-assembling all the
equipment, it has even got
all
its badges.
Very
shortly she will be on the
road, then I will be
able to prove all my
predictions for this car.
( I need to have it on the
road as I have just
disposed of my gas guzzler
at long last).
I had
a question the other day -
does it have
windows that open? The
answer is YES.
I am
still getting questions
about the legality of this
car in the US. The car is
designed to meet the kit
car requirements. If you are
new to the building of
cars get a hold of the
magazines in your country
on the building of kit cars
and specials. These
will give you a lot of
useful information on how to
go about it.
If it
helps I have built and lost
count of the number of
cars (both racing and sports
cars) I have built - many
of them are in various parts
of the world and I have
never had any problems with
the designs.

now functioning. I haven't
put
much up as yet but it will

What I
have put up is the plans for
the door hinge.
In
view of the many questions I
had about donor parts to
use I realized that the only
way to get a consistence of
construction was to design
the whole of the suspension.
The drawings for the front

My
last newsletter caused some reaction from you when it
came the proposed launch by
GM of their ‘next’ electric car.
My thanks go to Mark who
informed me that GM sourced
their batteries through a
subsidiary of TEXACO. Well – what
a surprise!
When you
consider battery technology is very simple. It
wouldn’t take a great
deal of money to set-up manufacture
to produce their own
batteries. I wonder why they don’t do it?
Basic battery
technology is very simple – the boffins would
have you believe otherwise.
The information has been
around for years and is
there for the taking.
A recent forum
letter indicated that an Australian had
designed and built an
electric car at the behest of the
Australian government.
After the car was tested and ready
to go into production the
Australian government withdrew
its support. So, said
designer has decided to move his car to
the UK to try and win
support of the government in the UK.
He hasn’t got
a cat in hells chance! Governments are as
cynical as the large
corporations, global warming or not, they
are not going to jeopardise
revenue, or profits by supporting
something which goes
totally against the grain.
I am still
waiting for that CEO or leading politician who is
prepared to take a strong
lead and to alter history!

A
lot has happened in the last two weeks, the
paintwork on the prototype
has been finished and it
now has some of its badges
fitted. Now all that remains
is to finally reassemble
every thing back into the car
for presentation.
I have always
enjoyed this stage of the construction. As with
all my previous prototypes
it is the anticipation of the project
moving for the first time
under its own power. Then
comes
the proving and tuning to
get the best possible performance.

3) Reply to some of your questions
========================================================
As you can
appreciate I receive a great deal of mail – probably
the biggest question I get
is ‘when am I going to see the finished
car?’ By the time the
next newsletter comes out you will see it.
A couple of
emails I have had were from constructors enquiring
about the use of
‘in-wheel’ motors. The Jeffrey EV1 lends itself
perfectly to this type of
configuration, the problem is that I can
only find one manufacturer
of this type of motor and that is PML.
Perhaps some of you know of
others!
I must apologise
for the last newsletter, many of you were unable
to see the photographs. I
will include the links to the relevant
photographs in the next
issue.
NOTE:
I am holding the
price of the manual and plans at the present
level until the pictures of
the finally assembled car are published.
With
summer almost over why not make that positive effort
to start that winter
project and build your very own electric
car for spring next year.
Keep
it going, but keep it electric, until the next newsletter.

The
press recently announced
that 'General Motors' were
planning to
re-launch their electric
car with a price tag of
$30,000. A tad
expensive in my opinion
considering that
there are fewer
working parts than the
normal petrol guzzler.
To
add insult they intend to
lease the batteries. Is
this a
rip-off or isn't it?
I would love to get into
the heads of some
of the executives
who make these decisions
to find out how
they work or not as
the case might be.
All
I can think is that they
must still be in the
pockets of the
'Petroleum
Companies'. If that is the
case I can see the next
generation of
electric vehicles being
scrapped before they
even go on sale.

As
promised here are a few
more photos of the car
under
construction.

The
above photo shows how the
car is built up from a
single
flat piece of
plywood. The two sub
frames can be seen,
these are glued and
bolted the ply to form the
chassis.

The
panels are then cut and
glued into position as can
been
seen in the photo
above. All very simple
really.

An
interesting discussion
took place on one of the
forums
about the running
costs of an electric
vehicle. I have printed
the blog in
full. Although this is in
Britain, costs in the US
are
very similar.
"Not that
I currently have a
conversion but run a
Berlingo
Electric Vanand
that's using 20Kwh to
charge it up at night,
for that I get
between 50 and 63 miles,
working on around a
60 mile trip using
off peakelectric to charge
it back up this
works out at about
94p
I have done about
1100 miles and this works
out at about
£17 in recharge
costs , if I had done
these miles in my
diesel doing about
45mpg it would have cost
me about £93
and in my 2.3 ltr
petrol it would be nearer
£200 !!!!!"
Chris B
This
works out at 1.5p or
3cents. This really must
be the way
forward.
Keep
it going, but keep it
electric, until the next
newsletter.

Ever wondered what it would be like to walk down
the street
in one of our cities where the only vehicles were powered by
electricity?
I think the first thing you would notice is the
lack of fumes,
the air would certainly be a lot fresher and clearer, you would
also notice that you no longer had that burning sensation on
your face.
I think you would also notice the reduced noise
levels plus a
reduction in stress levels in the people around you.
Ah, we can always dream as we cough our lungs
out.
I do feel sorry for those Olympic athletes who
have to compete
next year in Beijing. Their lungs will be well and truly
blocked up by the time they return home having breathed in all
that smog.

2) JEFFREY EV1 ELECTRIC CAR NEWS
==============================================================
Negotiations are well under way to manufacture
parts and kits
for the Jeffrey EV1. I shall be putting these up on the web
site as soon as prices are agreed.
Among the many comments I get is that I do not
show enough
info on the building of the car and that more photographs
showing the various stages of construction! I shall be putting
that right, I have put up additional photos and information
this week with more to follow.
The manual actually shows the stages of
construction with the
materials that are used.
==============================================================
3. LAST CHANCE
==============================================================
Wednesday is the last chance you will get to
purchase the
manual and drawing at the Summer Sale price of $62.50.
This price will not be repeated.
PS: With a major recession on both sides of the
Atlantic on
its way, will you be able to continue to run your gas-
guzzler?
The next issue of the newsletter will have more
photos of
parts and construction details.

CARBON
FOOTPRINTS?

IN
RECENT weeks there has
been a great deal of talk about
'Carbon Footprints' and 'Carbon
Offsetting' by the large
companies, being reported in the
press and on the TV. Frankly
this is just about the biggest
con that has ever been
conceived, to say that they are
concerned about global warming
beggars belief.
Paying
someone in Mexico to burn the
methane off pig dung or paying
for a few trees to be grown, is
not going to help with the
problems of this world Do you
think that the major companies
of the world are not going to
continue to burn fossil fuels in
their cars, airplanes and boats
and leave the lights blazing in
their offices and factories all
night when no one is there? Not
unless it hits them in the
pocket big time.
What
sickens me is the tokenism of
some of these large companies
getting on to the 'green'
bandwagon as a sop to the
general public. I have news for
them, we are not convinced.
There
are at least a few companies
around the world who are looking
at the idea of using
electrically driven vans for
their deliveries.
As
I said in my previous
newsletter:- I am not so worried
about global warming as I am
about improving health and
saving money.

1.
A number of emails that
I have had over the last
few weeks have asked me
to supply more
information on the car,
I can show some of the
details of construction,
but the manual is much
more comprehensive.
The
above photograph shows
the one-off mouldings
that are used for the
front and roof of the
car. Epoxy resin is used
as opposed to polyester
resin. With epoxy resin
it can be sanded and
rubbed down to give a
very professional
finish.
2.
I have had a number of
requests for kits and
parts. I am sorry but I
have to say at this
stage I cannot supply
kits, but, I will be
selling parts for
suspension, wishbones,
bearings etc. as soon as
I have been able to
organize manufacture.
Further
information will be
available in future
newsletters.

ELECTRIC-CARS-PLANS NEWSLETTER – 10 July 2007
– ISSUE 1
=====================================================
Hi
In this issue:
- A
Few Observations
- Bio
fuels?
- Jeffrey
EV1 Electric Car News
===================
FEATURE EDITORIAL ================
- A
FEW OBSERVATION
=====================================================
This is my first
newsletter since I launched the electric-cars-plans.com
website. I have been surprised by the level of interest and response
to
electric powered cars. This has confirmed a long held belief of mine
that
change comes from the bottom up and not from the large companies. Lets
face it we all know that the large motor manufacturers are so
entrenched
with the use of carbon fuels that the idea of using alternatives is
just a
passing fad as far as they are concerned.
What many of them have
come up with is the hybrid – very expensive and
the worst of both worlds.
The other idea is of
using hydrogen in liquid form, filling the tank of a car
from a pump. It does not bear thinking about – one shunt and you are
toast! There are safer ways of using hydrogen, but that would mean the
oil
companies and the petrol stations loosing out on revenue.
(More on this in the
future).
It is the smaller
companies and the enthusiast working in his garage or
workshop that is going to make the changes in attitudes in the future
as
to our transport needs.
You wait and see!
=====================================================
- Bio
fuels?
=====================================================
Many years ago when I
first became interested in self-sufficiency –
growing all my own food, producing my own power etc. I actually
produced my own bio fuels from used cooking oil. All very worthy, but
this can only be considered on a personal scale using what is after
all
a waste material. To consider bio fuels on a vast commercial scale is
a
disaster in the making.
The Rain Forest is being torn up and vast areas are being turned over
from the production of food to fulfil contracts issued by un-concerned
greedy, money grubbing companies to grow GM crops from which to
produce bio fuels. This may or may not fill the need of our depleted
stocks
of mineral fuels but it will certainly lead to higher food prices and
continued starvation in other parts of the world.
Bio fuel still pollutes the atmosphere and is a danger to health and
the
environment in exactly the same way as mineral fuels.
=====================================================
- Jeffrey
EV1 Electric Car News
=====================================================
You would think that
motoring journalists would get it right – BUT
they don’t.
A television program
recently showed an experiment-using alternative
fuels. Each driver was given the equivalent monetary value of fuel and
given the task of how far they could travel before running out of
fuel. As
you can appreciate the electric car won and the journalists comment
was.
“Ah, yes it can only do 40 miles before it has to be recharged and
you
cannot take the family out for the day in it!”
The whole point of an
electric car had surely eluded the poor fellow. The
average daily use of a vehicle on both sides of the pond is 12 miles.
An
electric vehicle is ideal for urban commuting, shopping and all those
short
trips – contributing to the health of our nations considerably.
The Jeffrey EV1 was
designed for just this form of use, being light and
flexible with plenty of interior space for shopping and possibly the
dog!
Being of home constructed , power units , batteries and layout
can be
designed to suit specific personal needs.
George Jeffrey
=====================================================
I would just like to
thank all those people who signed up for this newsletter,
Look out for the next issue -
it will have photographs and more
construction details of the Jeffrey EV1.
